Mediadivination2.0 strongly relies on the history of divination, free libre software and online networked databases as
content.
The textual data processed and used in the work are the year
pages available from the English version of Wikipedia, the popular open
publishing on-line encyclopedia. From the point of view of the algorithm it
retrieves, transform and mine the textual data, we employed well known
software installed by default on most of the Unix and Linux distributions.
The choice of those instead of other tools is in our case motivated by
both functional, ethical and aesthetic reasons.
We found minimalistic command line utilities like lynx and GNU sed to
be very efficient in text processing jobs. We also found found shell
scripting and live shell coding to have a fascinating and powerful aesthetic
that was in line with the conceptual assumptions and goals of the performance.
Ultimately we like to share our code, and do not subscribe to ecconomic rationalist ideas of
imposed corporate, economical and proprietary
boundaries to the fruition, reproduction and reinvention of
our work.
