Day 1
Day 2
Day 3
DAY 4 PORTHOLE
experience
Whaling 'trypot' monument, Hobart, Tasmania.
Viewed from the window of the 'is
theatre' space where our conversations
took place. A webcast of this monument took place during the day 2 session.
A whaeler's trypot was used to try (boil)
oil from whale blubber. The trypots stood with the flat sides adjacent
in a row on the ship's deck in a space called a hurricane house. The hurricane
house had a roof with chimneys above the pols & a brick duck pan floor.
bulbber was sliced into strips & placed in the pots where it was rendered
by fired underneath. The oil was ladled from on pot to the next &
finally poured through leather pips into barrels in the ships hold. Meanwhile
thick black smoke rolled all round & settled in a greasy film over
ship & sailors.
QUESTIONS FROM THOSE WHO ASKED
1) What are you trying to communicate?
See day two's proposals
2) How can one hope to map a constellation of a dialogue of any
other listener (non-participant)? A constellation is necessarily
viewed from a particular point in 3D space - what point out should
one be looking from to get the desired effect?
There is not a particular point. There is entering into a flow and
allowing oneself to shift.
3) What of a technology that offers such a wealth of information
and experience, yet hinges on the (in)ability of two people at two
screens to communicate meaning clearly across two rooms?
Communication usually starts with miscommunication, or no communication.
Time filters away the white noise, brings forward information through
experience. Communication usually entails a violence of some kind
which causes a cut, a seam a break and interface to begin a dialogue.
4) Is a media/medium that hinges so strongly on remote connection
and remote access more fraught with the possibility of failure?
Does the multiplicity of connections merely allow for a multiplicity
of failed connections, of 404 errors, of pages not found?
Possibility of failure is more exciting to explore than secure and
stable channels.
In regard to 404's there is a lot to say, in relation to white noise,
silence as a protest and/or wall of power, the null point for example, the
women in black, a protest pocket, a black hole of possibility. Explored
allot via Shu Lea Cheang, DasArts:
HUMANMATERIALMACHINEFACTOR with Guests, Jane Castle, Linda Dement
the ghost of the father is still in the machine, absent body of
the seer - the null point, unaccountability, references loud silence,
black/blank space in imagery, dead air on radio, listening, stillness,
space that is an open invitation or terrifying hole

DAY 2 - october 9th
What are the questions for us that are unanswered about our work?
Interrogation of Nancy Mauro-Flude
1)
what is a cellular vibration?
N talking M through her kinetic imagination...An impression of an
ancient time, when the primordial cell first contracted to make a tube.
This action formed a line, which opened out more possibilities for the
cell to be in the world. It is important to look for places where the
cells are depleted or too full, where they are not getting breath one
may enter through the skins tissues into the cellular fluid or through
the fluid itself. Internal balancing is observing that the cell is not
exploding or depleted, that the membranes are closing, contracting, yielding
to find the push, to digest different influences desires, societies and
opening, flourishing for space expanding in the action. Same for the cellular
network on a virtual level...

I'm glad you asked this as I have noticed people
in the past talking about things occurring on at a cellular level, yet
not really explaining more about it. So then it's a bit pretentious and
way too serious. Basically when there is communication going on at a cellular
level, you don't have to understand it rationally. Unspoken information
is passed around, like osmosis. It might be noticing another kind of presence.
Usually the cellular atomic level of things is an
expression of the larger picture. I loved and was incredibly challenged
by this idea when I experienced it in the experiential anatomy and physiology
work I undertook at Institute
of Somatic Movement Studies.
There is something going on but it is resonating. You can't package it.
It is the aliveness that is integral, its also about duration. In a cellular
state you have another sense of time. It is actually a sense of timelessness,
a primordial state. It's an intimate thing. In a sister O Operation sometimes
cells are modified by data that is made available to the machine via KeyWorks
software a/v input and output. Coded cells communicate, split and join
with other code cells both locally and translocally, working through the
vast memory environment of the sister O underwater database composed of
matter, data and code.

Wiggle by Manny Tan
Sonic Wire Sculptor by Amit Pitaru
How does it manifest itself?
Is this software a cellular vibration?
These are illustrations, unless it is mapped onto
something like the body then it is a kinetic visualizations. A cellular
vibration resonates the layers of skin, the inner side of the skin, under
the fat the intra-cellular fluid, the organs and interstitial fluid membranes.
I think you can have a cellular vibration over the network, but I cannot
technically tell you how that occurs. I just know if you've got a bunch
of nodes and data flows are being transmitted & received by them then
that will cause movement on some level to that network. Or you have haktivists
clogg up particular nodes which eventually leads to rupture.
Is a good rock and roll show an example of cellular vibration?
When it vibrates the organs you know it's good. I
feel as though I am in a sea of jelly, with my triumphs and sorrows /
a great R&R concert for me is like - an archaic church a place of
release - I can let go and breath - stretch out explore - astound discover.
A spinning body?
Spinning = cellular rejuvenation [q.time]
You go into a trance state, you in the mind of the
cerebral spinal fluid, the most fundamental state of being. A cerebral
state is a pre spinal state. You're not looking for anything, it's about
just being there - contracting and expanding.
How is a data stream a cellular vibration? Is a KeyWorx session?
Yes. Three people are there physically and virtually.
You are sending data through nodes and cells to get to other people and
being sent data at the same time. It is a live channel, which is integral.
There is a flow and there are currents going on. It's a live space, a
patch that never stops even when you close it and save it its never the
same when you open it.
After awhile, after two hours on line, you really go into this trance.
If you are spinning you go into a trance. If you are swimming after you
have done 20 laps, you can just keep going. If you are in KeyWorx, you
are in there. You are simultaneously transmitting and receiving.
It sends you into another sense of time.
When I connected together that night with you in Colombia and Linda in
Sydney, I completely lost track of the body, was not aware of my surroundings,
I was somewhere else.
You
were in a disembodied state.
Sometimes if I'm dancing, I leave my body, I'm in a disembodied
state.
In altered states, you teleport. I felt as if I had really entered the
unknown - via software to transport me, it was a remarkable feeling to
be there with you both.

Performance is a struggle to communicate with all the people
everyone, it's like a telepathic field. There are moments when people relax,
but when people feel the zeroing in its submission - dominance and submission
are just 2 sides tuning in. Tuning in the middle and that's what its like.
I feel a lot of archaic energy, I feel like a human movie - membranes
are pushed. Then you push and penetrate another one, a long ribbed canal
- A porthole. A snake pushing
out it's skin is like that / and it has got some ecstatic movements painful
moments, you die a worm and become a butterfly.
VNS Matrix in 1994 wrote many
cyber feminist manifestos. One appeared on an Australian billboard and
declared, "The clitoris is a direct line to the matrix,".
How is this different than from email or things like icq?
With email there are blocks, it is not live. Sure
Icq is a limited and prescribes how we communicate, but it definitely
helped me out when I was isolated in the South Colombia. For my weekly
appointment tap talk with you - so i'm not complaining.

In any case KeyWorx, allows for more of a creative
process to unfold and although its still has its somewhat noticeable aesthetic.
There is still more of an openness.
This is a huge can of worms, but regarding interface/
and communication, I think its important to mention the debate around
the streaming exercise during next5minutes
regarding which interface An`a*tom"ic
all should communicate within:
INTENSE
INTERFACE DISCUSSION: summary {link}
M: one day we can sit down and have a nice discussion
about the implied rules and protocols found embedded in most of our social,
political and cultural interactions ...i just know the feeling of raised
eyebrows and judgemental when i open up my g4 power book in ascii.
N: why? because you use an machine which is more expensive than other
machines for certain reasons? or because you make use of the unix OS it
is using nowadays? or why?
This conversation also in the very least also reveals
the gender biases hardwired into digital/activst cultures.
What about transcribing text
using chalk on a city street?
Chalk is the underwater database manifesting itself.
Stencils, chalk, posters general graffiti are subjugated knowledge's un
validated existences surfacing themselves, making space for these knowledges
that are restricted. You know what type of city you are in by the amount
of graffiti, it's a symbol of action and movment, also its about the content
of this graffiti - I get very scared of a place if I see no graffiti around.
Can you describe the underwater database and how it is related to cellular
vibration?
The underwater database contains information and experience
that hasn't been circulated, or articulated into Language as we know it
today. It is an underground level of consciousness.
A body is an underwater database. Bodies are full of water, the cells
are interconnected with the cosmos. A big change in human development
was when cell contracted/s making a tube we must learn to trust cellular
intelligence. Cellular communication is underneath the nervous system
is also faster and more primary. As you experienced briefly a cellular
hands-on touch is usually my starting point, this could lead to organ
jiggling, sounding, sensing holding via hand, I really trust what comes
into my intuition. I take energy out through the limbs. Organ rolls, compression
and suspension, taking out the slack. Tapping, rocking with the rhythm
of organs this always depends on the circumstance.
In this world we are only given a limited number of ways to manifest this
information. Our perceptions are trapped by our desires. And so this information
is underwater and we must find some way of mobilizing it, of finding its
flows. This is what sister O does. Her Operations around the underwater
data base are not unlike how the motor nerves efferent fibres carry information
from the brain and spinal cord out through the different levels of the
body - or in sister Os case its mainly the social sphere. The outgoing
nerves and descending tracts are located anterior to the vertebrae - or
underground as subjugated knowledge's. The sensory nerves collect data
from the greater environment and carry information and awareness into
the Central Nervous System from the cells.
To receive this cellular intelligence you have to start paying attention
to the signs. Like that circle in the middle of the bush scrub we saw
at Roaring beach, then the healers pot we you saw outside our window that
looks like a cluster of cells, I had bought that cell ball, which led
us into the cellular work and discussion.
A good way to experience a pre-spinal state is to
imagine that there are butterflies on your fingertips, and start moving
as if not to hurt them then you begin to find a flow if you stay with
this. Phoebe Neville a dancer from Judson Church era, and now also teacher
at I.S.M.S told me
that in the 'shaman' world the totem of the butterfly is like the 'ferrari',
it goes very smooth and fast but you have to know how to drive it or....
The operation zone is where things get transformed. A tunneling occurs,
if this is hard to imagine you could think of Dracula, whose constantly
moving through different portals and manifesting into differ net forms.
sister O during a burial [re coding cell rejuvination] in sth Colombia
Much of the time, sister O is like
ophelia, serpentine and hyper aware and connected, existing on the horizontal
plane interconnected with the more-than-human world. It's familiar for
her to be in the underwater database. But when she's vibrated enough,
she comes through to Operate in the 'vertical' world and with this brings
part of the database with her.
Can you tell me about how you recodes archetypes with your divination
stick?
The archetypal form is a western construct locked
into a structure. I'm releasing these into other states, and ways of being
understood, as entities of forces and flows. The cells inter-connected
and alive. For example, the time we in a sister O trinity released the
image of the sculpture of St. Isabelle and 10,000 maidens who in 1400's
were brutally killed by the Huns on a pilgrimage back from Rome.
But doesn't that put you on a moral high ground? Wouldn't it be better
if other's brought their media in, like a divination.
St. Isabelle and 10,000 maidens
released [qtime]
well in the case of Isabelle, the story really moved
me, that these women were killed because they were nomads and did things
differently. It was kind of spooky that the sculpture was by some one
anonymous - most likely a woman who would have not otherwise been given
the chance to exihbit her sculpture in the Rikjk's Meuseum. And it was
also that I really just imported the Qtime without even thinking into
keyworx, and then this compulsion just over took sister O that this media
must be realeased into another state.
But in most cases, I completly agree it should not
be sister O imposing who and what
entity needs recoding. Someone should come to get released or as you suggested
bring an image they want to be released into another state.
In regard to our meetings between you, me and linda I think it would be
nice to relinquish control and throw things in, because it starts from
aesthetical position
everyone playing nice, and trying to make things happen.
Yes, but first or at some stage I really want to
do one recoding of 'bone man' to see what manifests - like what happened
with 'St Isabelle'. Although I agree to not start with a theme or jpeg
and see where the unknown takes us.
I would like to say I am excited about the next step
for sister O and her text focus for the next 6 months, especially in relation
to her trinity. Arthur
Rimbaud dreamt of recreating life through his words decided that women
would be the great poets of the future. "...these poets shall exist
when the age long slavery shall have ended when, she will be able to live
by and for herself, when man hitherto having given her freedom, she will
be a poet. Women will discover the unknown. Will her word be different
from ours? She will discover things that will be strange and unfathomable,
repulsive and delicate. We shall take them from her and we shall understand
them.
